American Made Above Ground Pools: Radiant Metric Round

You may feel that now is not the time to be thinking about pools in Upstate NY with the snow covering the ground and the cold temperatures, but now is the perfect time to start doing your research. In this entry of our “American-Made Above Ground Pools” blog entry we will be giving you information about Radiant Above Ground Metric Round Pools.

In our March 2014 blog entry, “Choosing Your Pool: Radiant Pool Edition” we introduced you to all the unique qualities of the Radiant In-Ground Pool and why it is a perfect fit for this area. These same qualities are true for the Above Ground Metric Series, such as:

What sets this pool apart from the rest is in its design. Radiant Pools use the same technology used in the construction of aircraft, which makes the pool walls stronger than steel, polymer and even concrete. You never have to worry about the sustainability of your Radiant Pool because the walls will never rust, warp or crack.

The Metric Round Above Ground Radiant Pools come with 7 dimension choices, starting at 16’ and going up to 33’. With the superior wall construction of the Radiant Pool it can be installed aboveground, semi-inground, on a slope or into a hill. The Radiant Metric Series Pool fits any backyard and any budget.

You can also add on accessories:

FENCE AND GATE KIT: Add an extra layer of security to your pool with the fence and gate kit. The kit comes with a custom fence mounting clip with an easy slide-and-bolt assembly that creates a clean, finished look. Nothing hangs over the top, no brackets bolted to the side of the pool. The kit includes fence sections, custom fence mounting clips, gate, and all hardware.

RADIANT INSIDE STEP:  In the past, when you thought of above ground pools, you would picture a ladder as your only means of entry into the pool. Radiant Pools offers an inside step that allows you to walk into the pool, just like in their in-ground pools. Making it more accessible for all members of your family and friend

CUSTOM WINTER COVER:Winters can be very harsh and damaging on above ground pools, but with a winter cover designed exclusively to fit into the coping of Radiant Metric Pools you can be put at ease that your pool will weather the winter. The coping, made of PVC, covers the edge of the pool wall and has an inside track to hold the pool liner in place and an outer track to hold the Metric Custom Winter Cover in place.

Available for both standard 2” and premium 4” coping, the custom fit provides perfect coverage for winterizing your Metric Pool. The custom cover is made with ArmorKote™ technology with a triple laminated no-rip polyethylene weave. The perimeter has a triple edge reinforced binding and it is lightweight for easy installation, removal and storage.

The built-to-last insulated wall panels help your pool water heat up faster and keep it warmer longer. This means you can start your swimming season earlier and swim later. The average Radiant Pool extends your swim season by 2 months! With the superior heat retention properties of a Radiant Pool, you can swim during the entire swimming season without the need of a heater saving $1000’s on heating costs.

A Radiant Pool is an investment that you can feel good about because it helps to lessen your footprint. The materials used to construct Radiant Pools are ozone friendly and 100% recyclable. They are the only energy efficient, an Energy Star™ Partner since 2006, and environmentally smart pools on the market.

The Metric Series warranty includes protection from winter damage! Snow and ice buildup can destroy a traditional aboveground pool. The incredibly strong Radiant pool wall minimizes this potential harm.

Radiant Pools are 100% made in the USA and come with a 100% lifetime warranty that can be transferred to new owners if you should ever sell your home. Also, if your purchase is financed through a home equity loan, your interest is considered tax deductible.

Enjoying your Spa in the Winter

Envision this…soaking in your steamy spa, sipping hot cocoa while the snow falls lightly around you. What could be more relaxing? In order to make this relaxing moment a reality in the cold winter months of Upstate NY, there are a few steps you need to take to ensure proper operation and efficiency of your “little oasis” all winter long!

  1. Stock up on Supplies – Check your supplies and make sure you have an extra filter cartridge and plenty of sanitizer, chemicals, test strips, and any other spa supplies you use to last you through the winter. You don’t want to be all set to jump in and relax and realize that you don’t have the supplies you need.
  2. Protect Your Pipes – The winters in Central NY tend to be very cold and with this weather comes the risk of the pipes freezing in your spa. All you need to do is make sure that your spa’s freeze protection system is activated. This will help to maintain a constant water temperature even when you’re not using the spa. If your spa doesn’t have freeze protection, don’t worry, you can set your timer to cycle on for 15 – 20 minutes every hour, this will keep warm water circulating through the pipes and decrease the chances of them freezing.
  1. Keep it Covered – Use your insulated cover whenever you are not using your spa. This is an essential step to help reduce the amount of energy used during the winter. Consider using a thermal blanket under the cover to help keep the heat in, reduce chemical use, and decrease moisture build-up on the cover. Remember to spray your vinyl cover with a protectant to safeguard against the harsh winter weather. If your spa is in an area outside where snow can accumulate on the cover, put a tarp over the cover each time your are done using it, then if snow does accumulate, just pull the tarp off and the snow is gone. Remember to periodically inspect your cover for tears, leakage, or other deformities. Make sure your cover fits well and is in good condition as this is the number one way to preserve your spa’s cleanliness AND save on energy expenses.
  1. Watch the Water Level – Check the water level in your spa regularly, especially if you do not use your spa every day. If the water gets too low, the pumps and heater may stop working which may lead to freezing water.
  2. Maintain the Water Temperature –The colder it gets, the longer it takes for your spa to heat up. It is less expensive and more efficient to maintain the water temperature of your spa on a daily basis than it is to let it get extremely cold and then reheat it when you want to use the spa. It also keeps water from freezing in the pipes and reduces chemical use.
  3. Turn off Air Jets – The air jets inject cold air in to the spa, thus cooling the water and requiring more energy to heat it back up. So, during the cold winter months, keep the jets turned off. If you still want to use the jets, make sure they are turned off after every use.
  4. Call now for service to fix anything that’s not working 100%.   It’s no fun to head out to the spa for relaxation and find out that it isn’t working.  Complete a check of the entire spa and if something isn’t working, get it fixed right away.
  1. Add music and accessories!  Make your spa area frosty and festive. With the right spa accessories, you can make your spa experience extra enjoyable. Why not add a new step, safety rail, spa caddy or a towel rack?  Visit our website at for more information on these products.

If you currently do not own a spa and would like more information on purchasing one or have questions in regards to the spa that you own please give us a call today at (315) 458-8800, or stop into our North Syracuse or East Syracuse location and we would be glad to help.

Have a great winter!

Pool Safety Tips

Pool season is finally here! With it comes a chance to revisit the Pool Safety Rules and Guidelines with your family and friends. It is important to make sure that everyone who will be using your pool and spa know the safety rules and guidelines to insure a wonderful pool season.

Post the pool and spa rules near the entrance of the Pool or Spa so that every time you get in you can view them.

Have your children take the Safe Swimmer Pledge:

1. I pledge to never swim alone

2. I pledge to never play or swim near drains or suction fittings

3. I pledge to always dive feet first

4. I pledge to obey the pool rules

You can go here to download a certificate to give them as a reminder about being safe in the pool.

Follow these Water Safety Tips from the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF)

  • Teach children water safety and swimming skills as early as possible.
  • Always brief babysitters on water safety, emphasizing the need for constant supervision.
  • Appoint a “designated watcher” to monitor children during social gatherings at or near pools.
  • Equip doors and windows that exit to a pool area with alarms.
  • Have a phone by the pool with emergency numbers programmed into speed-dial.
  • Post CPR instructions and learn the procedures.
  • Keep rescue equipment poolside.
  • Keep a first aid kit at poolside.
  • Maintain constant visual contact with children in a pool or pool area. If a child is missing, check the pool first; seconds count in preventing death or disability.
  • Don’t use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. Never allow a young child in a pool without an adult.
  • Don’t leave objects such as toys that might attract a child in the pool and pool area.
  • Don’t rely on swimming lessons, life preservers, or other equipment to make a child “water safe.”
  • Never assume someone else is watching a child in a pool area.
  • Don’t leave chairs or other items of furniture where a child could use them to climb into a fenced pool area.
  • Let us not forget our 4 legged friends that like to have fun in the pool as well. We love our pets and they love to come play with us in the water so let’s make sure they are safe too.
  • Try not to let them drink the pool water, keep fresh water handy for them instead
  • Wash them off after their dip in the pool so the chlorine does not dry their skin
  • Make sure your dog knows where to enter and exit the pool safely, so they don’t hurt themselves clawing at the sides of the pool.
  • Just as with kids, take it slow and don’t overdo it. They get tired too.
    • One sure sign your dog is getting tired is that their back end begins to droop in the water, when this happens, it is time for a break
  • There are life vests available for all shapes and sizes of dogs.
    • Certain dogs such as breeds with shorter legs and broad chests (bulldogs, Corgi’s, Pugs, etc.) are not effective swimmers. They may need the support of a life vest.
    • Heavily muscled dogs such as Greyhounds with little body fat will not be as buoyant in the water and might need the life vest for support.

Always have a plan for First Aid.

Enhancing Your Pool Purchase

vanquishWhen buying a pool there are many questions that you must answer before making your final decision. One question that you should answer is what type of circulation and cleaning system will you install in your backyard oasis. In our first entry in our “Enhancing Your Pool Purchase” blog series we will give you information on the Vanquish in-floor circulation and cleaning system to see if this might be the right fit for you and your pool.

How the Vanquish in-floor circulation and cleaning system works:

  1. Warm, clean water is pumped through the six port water valve and is distributed to all areas of the pool
  2. Your pool is divided into separate cleaning zones, which are turned on and off by the six port water valve
  3. Each zone has a system of rotating cleaning pop-up jets placed in the floors and down jets placed in the walls. One by one the six port water valve delivers filtered water to each zone of the pool
  4. They work together to clean your pool by sweeping debris to the pool’s main drain and skimmer area.

While the Vanquish in floor circulation and cleaning system is cleaning your pool it is also circulating water. This system is better than a traditional pool system because it circulates the water evenly throughout every square inch of your pool instead of just circulating the water on top.

Circulation benefits:

  1. Because the Vanquish system circulates water through every square inch of your pool, there are no dead zones where algae can grow
  2. Less chemicals are needed
  3. Eliminates cold spots for a more comfortable swimming experience
  4. Saves on energy costs for the life of the pool
  5. Better for the environment: the chemicals are better circulated, thus less are lost into the atmosphere

Cleaning benefits:

  1. Non-contact cleaning, extends the life of a vinyl liner
  2. Cleans while you relax and have fun
  3. Once done cleaning, it disappears back into the pool floor, no clean up or storage of equipment
  4. The system leaves your pool swim ready

The Vanquish system is built to last and comes with a lifetime limited warranty on all cleaning jets within the system.

If you would like to enjoy your pool instead of taking time to clean it, then the Vanquish in-floor circulation and cleaning system may be the right fit for you. Call us today for more information or to meet with a sales representative (315) 458-8800.

Backyard Barbecues are the Best

July is the perfect month for sunshine, fireworks, swimming and backyard barbecues. While we can’t control Mother Nature we can make sure you have all you need for a refreshing swim and a tasty BBQ in your backyard.

Source: Tarson via Pinterest

Let’s talk grills! The grill is the unnamed secret ingredient of every amazing BBQ. Making sure your grill is well maintained and cleaned regularly will ensure many years of use and great tasting food. Whether you use charcoal or gas grills, cleaning is a must.

Consider your grill the same as your kitchen stove. It needs to be cleaned after each use. You wouldn’t leave your kitchen stove dirty after use and you shouldn’t leave your grill either.  Completely wipe down your grill after each use.

Have a wire brush handy to clean excess food, foil and marinade from grates. A helpful hint for the life of your grill: clean the grates right after you cook rather than before! Cleaning after cooking will help minimize rust from the left over food.

If you have a charcoal grill be sure you have plenty of charcoal before you begin cooking.  If you have a gas grill have an extra propane tank on hand or fill your tank before your big event. We’ve all been there food on the grill cooking along,  and suddenly BAM you’re out of gas! It’s an easy to avoid BBQ mistake. Be prepared.

The best part of any backyard BBQ is the food!

Tips for Great Grilling:

  • Preheat your grill. Warm it up for 15-20 minute before cooking.
  • Don’t leave your grill unattended.
  • Clean your grill after each use…. it’s important. We can’t say it enough.
  • Safety is important. Keep children and pets clear of the grill
  • Flames are inevitable. Don’t panic and put them out quickly to prevent spreading.
  • When not in use, store your grill properly. Cover it from the elements.

Here some great recipes for you to try this summer on your Tarson Broil King Grill!

Grilled Vegetable Napoleons

from: BroilKing

Substitute or add other vegetables as you wish. Some nice additions might be new potatoes or red peppers. Although the stacks are attractive and easy to serve, you may also arrange the grilled vegetables and cheese in a casserole.

1/2 cup olive oil

1 large eggplant, cut in 12 slices (1/3″ thick)

3 medium zucchinis, cut in 24 slices (1/4″ thick)

3 large tomatoes, cut in 6 slices (1/3″ thick)

3 medium red onions, cut in 12 slices (1/3″ thick)

3/4 cup ricotta cheese

salt and pepper to taste

2 tsp fresh thyme, chopped

1/2 lb mozzarella cheese, sliced 1/4″ thick

6 sprigs fresh rosemary

Preheat barbecue and set on LOW. Brush vegetables with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and grill slowly until tender, turning once. Transfer the vegetables to a tray, arranging them in a single layer, and cover tightly with plastic wrap. The vegetables may be grilled a day in advance, and refrigerated after cooling. Bring the vegetables back to room temperature before proceeding.

Stir together the ricotta, thyme, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.

Place one slice of eggplant on a lightly oiled baking sheet or foil pan. Spread 1 tablespoon of the ricotta mixture over the eggplant. Cover with 2 slices of zucchini, 1 slice of onion, 1 slice of mozzarella, 1 slice of tomato, 2 slices of zucchini, and 1 slice of onion. Spread 1 tablespoon of the ricotta mixture over the onion, and top with another slice of eggplant. Repeat this procedure with the remaining vegetables to make 5 more stacks.

Insert a wooden skewer through the centre of each stack to create a hole from top to bottom. Remove the bottom leaves from each rosemary sprig, leaving one inch of leaves on the top. Insert 1 sprig into the centre hole in each napoleon, and return to the barbecue. Heat for about 5 minutes on LOW, or until mozzarella is melted and vegetables are warmed through.

Thai Grilled Shrimp

from: BroilKing

Another super-quick and easy appetizer! Any commercially prepared Thai sauce will do the trick, but we have mentioned our favorite. Use a wok if you have one for easy stir-frying of the shrimp.

1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined

1 1/4 cups President’s Choice Memories of Thailand Fiery chili Pepper sauce

2 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

Combine all the marinade ingredients in a resealable bag and add shrimp. Refrigerate at least one hour and up to five hours before grilling.

Preheat barbecue on HIGH. Scrub cooking grids thoroughly with a wire brush, then brush them lightly with vegetable or olive oil. Place shrimp on grids. Turn once during cooking. Time will vary with the size of the shrimp, but the shrimp will turn opaque and curl slightly when cooked. Do not overcook!

Place on a platter and serve with toothpicks.

Barbecued Back Ribs

from: BroilKing

A rib rack is a great tool to have, but if you haven’t bought yours yet try stacking the ribs against each other on an angle. Lay the ribs flat on the grids for the last few minutes of cooking while brushing them with the sauce.

3 lb pork backribs

salt and pepper to taste

1 cup ketchup

1 cup water

1/3 cup worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp chili powder

dash hot pepper sauce

2 tbsp brown sugar

Place a drip pan over the coals, under the cooking grids. Pour in one inch of water or other liquid such as apple cider or wine, or a combination. Replace the cooking grids and preheat barbecue on LOW.

Peel the membrane off the back of the ribs using your fingers. (This makes an enormous difference in the tenderness of the ribs.) Cut each sleeve or rack of ribs into six-inch sections. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and place in a rib rack on the barbecue. Cook slowly on lowest heat for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, combine the remaining ingredients in a saucepan and simmer on the side burner until the sauce thickens. Apply this sauce during the last few minutes of cooking to prevent the sugar from burning, and pass the extra around the table.

We would like to wish each  of you a Happy 4th of July and BBQ season.

Using Your Pool: Aqua Aerobics more than Jogging in Place

While swimming and splashing in your pool this summer you will be burning calories. Water is one of the best fitness tools: It provides resistance, which strengthens muscles and boosts cardio intensity. It also supports some of your weight, making workouts easier on joints and reducing injury.  Aquatic exercises can also burn fat faster than traditional cardio workouts.

Tarson Pools and spas great install syracuse, NY
Using your pool on a hot summer day is a great way to get your heart rate up and enjoy a low-impact workout. The best part about working out in your pool is it often doesn’t feel like traditional cardio! It’s  a great way to begin an exercise routine or shake things up.

Ensure you have a great pool workout by following a few easy steps:

  1. Drink plenty of water before and after your workout. You may not feel it but you will be working up a sweat! Plus staying hydrated when outside is an important tip regardless of what your activity level is. Water is your friend.
  2. Wear water shoes during your workout it helps maintain traction with the pool floor and is also another form of resistance.
  3. Try aqua aerobic workout equipment. A formal aqua aerobic kit should include a belt, webbed gloves and foam dumbbells. You can also use Noodles, rubber balls and kick boards. These tools can improve your pool workout by increasing the intensity of water resistance.

There are the obvious pool workouts that include laps, jogging in place, kicking and wall push ups. But there are many other options for getting in a challenging pool workout out.

Here are some workout ideas (source):

First, you will need a noodle, webbed gloves, water shoes and a ball.

1. Spiderman

Climb the pool wall like Spiderman climbs buildings! This exercise helps you defy gravity in a way that just isn’t possible on land. It also provides a unique challenge to your core and back muscles.

How to do it: While standing in water at the side of the pool, stabilize your upper body by sweeping your hands back and forth as you run your legs up the side of the pool and then back down to the floor. Do four Spiderman exercises, alternating the leading leg each time you reach the end of one jogging circuit.

2. Pool Plank

Planks are a proven core strengthener on land. But if you don’t have a strong upper body, it’s hard to hold it long enough to give abdominal muscles a good workout. All of that changes in a pool. In addition, planks boost your endurance and “the water pushing and pulling on you increases the challenge to your core,” Sanders explains.

How to do it: Stand on the pool floor. Hold a noodle (it’s also called a “water log,” a long cylindrical piece of foam that floats) vertically in both hands. Press it straight down into the water and lean forward until your body is on an even incline. (Your head stays out of the water.) Try to keep yourself stable for 1-2 minutes.

3. Fly Backs

On land and in water, fly backs work the muscles in the upper chest, back and arms. They also improve posture.

How to do it: Start in a lunge position with your right knee bent and your left leg extended straight behind you. Reach your arms straight out in front of you at chest height — palms touching, fingers extended and thumbs up. Open your arms straight out to the sides, then return them to the starting position to complete one rep.

Do four sets of 8-15 reps, switching the forward leg each time you lunge. To boost your cardio workout and the number of calories you burn, do your reps while walking or jogging across the pool.

4. Core Ball Static Challenge:

This deceptively simple-looking exercise strengthens your core as you work to keep yourself upright. By changing the position of your arms and legs, it becomes four exercises in one.

How to do it:

Version A: Stand in a lunge with your right leg bent and your left extended behind you. Hold an inflated ball about 6 inches in diameter (like those found in a drugstore or toy store) with both hands directly in front of your navel. Keep your shoulders down and back. Hold this position for 30 seconds, engaging your core to keep you upright. Switch legs and hold for another 30 seconds.

Version B: Do the entire exercise one more time, this time holding the ball with your arms outstretched — so the ball is just under the surface of the water — for added challenge to your core.

Version C: Move your legs out of the lunge and balance on your right leg with your left knee lifted. Hold the ball in front of your navel as in version A and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat while standing on the left leg with the right knee lifted.

Version D: Balance again on your right foot, left knee lifted. Hold the ball with arms outstretched as in version B and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat while standing on the left leg with the right knee lifted.

What is the theme of your event? A simple backyard BBQ, an evening dinner by the pool, or a more casual family event?  Is this a fun kid friendly event or an intimate gathering of adults?

For a children friendly event be sure to provide your guests with little swimmers, towels, sunscreen and pool game options like diving sticks. Some guests will bring their own but it never hurts to have extra on hand.

For an adult theme pool party consider the ambiance of the event. Maybe something simple and airy like this would work. If the party is more of an evening affair consider floating candles or pool lights.

Get creative with the invitations to your pool party. Don’t just call people to invite them,  give them something special to look forward to.

Now the party is planned and the guests are invited! Making sure your guests are comfortable is the next order of business. Plan that not all guests will be swimming, some may want to sit and chat. Be sure you have provided plenty of seating and space to relax near the pool for those who won’t be getting in the water.

Shade will be important as well!  An umbrella or seating in parts of your backyard that are naturally shaded will make your guests more comfortable. We offer a full line of retractable awnings, if your backyard offers no natural shade.  You don’t want sunburned guests leaving your party.

For an adult pool party consider adding in theme ideas where they make sense. Adults might not like a shark filled with fruit but maybe a signature cocktail or mocktail is more fitting. You can also add other elements that will make the day special and memorable like these napkin rings. It’s the small details that will have your guests raving!

Only one Jacuzzi & Trivia

We are the exclusive Jacuzzi dealer in Central New York. This month Jacuzzi launched a new TV ad campaign. The campaign highlights how a Jacuzzi makes you feel and we couldn’t agree more.

The first ad features BBQ and since this is Memorial Day weekend which is known for BBQ we thought it would be a great time to share these with you!

Now for Jacuzzi Trivia:

Question: What did the Jacuzzi brothers invent that earned them a gold medal at the California State Fair in 1930?

Answer: The Jacuzzi brothers received a Gold Medal Award for their invention – a new type of pump that drew water out of the ground more efficiently than any pump that came before it. They successfully revolutionized hydraulic pumps used for agriculture.

By the 1950s, the Jacuzzi brothers utilized their expertise in hydraulics to benefit a young family member stricken with painful rheumatoid arthritis. They created an aerating pump designed to be submerged in a bathtub to provide pain-relieving hydrotherapeutic treatments. source

We want to wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend!  All of our stores will be open on Sunday May 27th & Monday May 28th to assist you with your pool and spa needs.
