Pool Safety Tips

pool-safety

Pool season is finally here! With it comes a chance to revisit the Pool Safety Rules and Guidelines with your family and friends. It is important to make sure that everyone who will be using your pool and spa know the safety rules and guidelines to insure a wonderful pool season.

Post the pool and spa rules near the entrance of the Pool or Spa so that every time you get in you can view them.

Have your children take the Safe Swimmer Pledge:

1. I pledge to never swim alone

2. I pledge to never play or swim near drains or suction fittings

3. I pledge to always dive feet first

4. I pledge to obey the pool rules

You can go here to download a certificate to give them as a reminder about being safe in the pool.

Follow these Water Safety Tips from the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF)

  • Teach children water safety and swimming skills as early as possible.
  • Always brief babysitters on water safety, emphasizing the need for constant supervision.
  • Appoint a “designated watcher” to monitor children during social gatherings at or near pools.
  • Equip doors and windows that exit to a pool area with alarms.
  • Have a phone by the pool with emergency numbers programmed into speed-dial.
  • Post CPR instructions and learn the procedures.
  • Keep rescue equipment poolside.
  • Keep a first aid kit at poolside.
  • Maintain constant visual contact with children in a pool or pool area. If a child is missing, check the pool first; seconds count in preventing death or disability.
  • Don’t use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. Never allow a young child in a pool without an adult.
  • Don’t leave objects such as toys that might attract a child in the pool and pool area.
  • Don’t rely on swimming lessons, life preservers, or other equipment to make a child “water safe.”
  • Never assume someone else is watching a child in a pool area.
  • Don’t leave chairs or other items of furniture where a child could use them to climb into a fenced pool area.
  • Let us not forget our 4 legged friends that like to have fun in the pool as well. We love our pets and they love to come play with us in the water so let’s make sure they are safe too.
  • Try not to let them drink the pool water, keep fresh water handy for them instead
  • Wash them off after their dip in the pool so the chlorine does not dry their skin
  • Make sure your dog knows where to enter and exit the pool safely, so they don’t hurt themselves clawing at the sides of the pool.
  • Just as with kids, take it slow and don’t overdo it. They get tired too.
    • One sure sign your dog is getting tired is that their back end begins to droop in the water, when this happens, it is time for a break
  • There are life vests available for all shapes and sizes of dogs.
    • Certain dogs such as breeds with shorter legs and broad chests (bulldogs, Corgi’s, Pugs, etc.) are not effective swimmers. They may need the support of a life vest.
    • Heavily muscled dogs such as Greyhounds with little body fat will not be as buoyant in the water and might need the life vest for support.

Always have a plan for First Aid.

Enhancing Your Pool Purchase

vanquishWhen buying a pool there are many questions that you must answer before making your final decision. One question that you should answer is what type of circulation and cleaning system will you install in your backyard oasis. In our first entry in our “Enhancing Your Pool Purchase” blog series we will give you information on the Vanquish in-floor circulation and cleaning system to see if this might be the right fit for you and your pool.

How the Vanquish in-floor circulation and cleaning system works:

  1. Warm, clean water is pumped through the six port water valve and is distributed to all areas of the pool
  2. Your pool is divided into separate cleaning zones, which are turned on and off by the six port water valve
  3. Each zone has a system of rotating cleaning pop-up jets placed in the floors and down jets placed in the walls. One by one the six port water valve delivers filtered water to each zone of the pool
  4. They work together to clean your pool by sweeping debris to the pool’s main drain and skimmer area.

While the Vanquish in floor circulation and cleaning system is cleaning your pool it is also circulating water. This system is better than a traditional pool system because it circulates the water evenly throughout every square inch of your pool instead of just circulating the water on top.

Circulation benefits:

  1. Because the Vanquish system circulates water through every square inch of your pool, there are no dead zones where algae can grow
  2. Less chemicals are needed
  3. Eliminates cold spots for a more comfortable swimming experience
  4. Saves on energy costs for the life of the pool
  5. Better for the environment: the chemicals are better circulated, thus less are lost into the atmosphere

Cleaning benefits:

  1. Non-contact cleaning, extends the life of a vinyl liner
  2. Cleans while you relax and have fun
  3. Once done cleaning, it disappears back into the pool floor, no clean up or storage of equipment
  4. The system leaves your pool swim ready

The Vanquish system is built to last and comes with a lifetime limited warranty on all cleaning jets within the system.

If you would like to enjoy your pool instead of taking time to clean it, then the Vanquish in-floor circulation and cleaning system may be the right fit for you. Call us today for more information or to meet with a sales representative (315) 458-8800.

Choosing Your Pool: Saltwater Edition

tarsons-073If you’re considering purchasing a pool this season, we want you to know all of the options available. In this blog series, we will share industry insights to help you find the perfect pool for you. Saltwater pools have become very popular over the last ten years as an alternative to chlorine pools, so we’re sharing the pros and cons to help you decide.

Pros
1. Fewer chemicals
Saltwater pools require fewer chemicals to maintain healthy water. This is both a money saver and more environmentally safe. You don’t have to store chemicals in your home and your water testing will be a lot simpler.

2. Reduced maintenance
Wouldn’t it be perfect to have a pool that cleans itself? Saltwater pools essentially do just that. The pool’s generator converts the salt into pure chlorine, which maintains water sanitation and prevents the growth of algae. This allows a constant, balanced supply of chlorine instead of having to manually add it.

3. Overall cost
Although saltwater pools are more money upfront, they pay for themselves after a few years. Maintaining a saltwater pool can be up to half the cost of maintaining a chlorine pool. These savings come from a reduction in chemical cost, testing or hiring help.

4. Unique experience
A saltwater pool owner will tell you they have never thought twice about their purchase. The water experience is undeniably different because it feels softer. No worries about chemical odors, allergic reactions, dried out skin or irritated eyes.

Cons
1. Salt corrosion
Salt is highly corrosive, so avoid placing metal furniture or handrails directly in the water. Also be aware of the chlorine generator. If too much salt is converted into chlorine it can cause damage to your heater. Speak to your sales rep about safe practices to prevent this from happening.

2. Pump cost
Since most saltwater pools have a self-maintaining system, the pool pump must operate at all times. This is to ensure enough chlorine is being produced to disinfect the water. Having the pump contstantly running can increase your utility bill, so speak with your sales rep about the estimated price increase.

3. Expensive parts
Saltwater pools are different in how they are built. For instance, a salt cell, or salt generator, is unique to this pool and can be costly to replace. Ask your sales rep about warranties and how to maintain water chemistry to prevent any damage.

If you’re looking for a fresh water experience, then a saltwater pool may be the right fit for you. Call us today for more information or to meet with a sales representative (315) 458-8800. Check back for our next post in the series to learn how you can extend your swimming season by two months in a Radiant Pool.

Why Purchasing Local Bulk Chemical Packages Can Save You Time and Money

ImageImage

May has finally arrived and soon it will be time to open your pool. Once the cover is off it’s time to add the perfect cocktail of chemicals to keep your pool balanced and clean. We want you to save this summer, so here are 5 reasons you can benefit from buying local bulk chemical packages for your pool.

1. Reduce Trips to the Store
There are certain chemicals you will rely on to make sure your pool is healthy. Once you know what products those are and how much you will need for your pool’s size, you can purchase a package that will keep you well stocked for the summer. Instead of driving to the store every time you need a refill, you’ll have what you need on hand.

2. No More Waiting in Line
With our new bulk package ordering system you will be able to order online or call your neighborhood store to place your package order. You have the option of paying in advance, or at the closest store. Once the package is ready you will go to a special checkout to finish the transaction or pick up the package and go with no waiting in line!

3. Save Money
Purchasing a bulk chemicals package will save you money and you will spend less on gas because you’ll make fewer trips to the store. We guarantee our packages will beat any national retailers’ price and assure that our packages only contain what your pool needs. We also provide options when it comes to the packages for purchase. We offer a BioGuard brand package or the Tarson brand package. BioGuard is a premium brand for the pool owner who wants the best chemicals to treat their pool. The Tarson brand is a high-quality, yet economical brand for exceptional pool care for any budget.

4. Don’t Buy What You Don’t Need
When national retailers put together bulk packages, they don’t have your unique pool in mind. You could be buying extra chemicals you don’t need while not buying enough of the chemicals you do. Our packages have adequate dosing based on experience in this region, so you get the right type and quantity of necessary chemicals every time.

5. Save On Shipping
All of our packages can be picked up at our 6 locations, so you don’t have to pay high shipping fees. Not to mention you will be able to talk with an expert who knows your pool as opposed to a salesperson out of the area.

This summer spend less time in your car and more time in your pool by stocking up on your chemicals. We also offer 24-hour water testing drop off and same day water analysis at all Tarson Pools locations. Just leave your sample in the water-testing drop off box and we will send you your results the next day. Stop in to your neighborhood Tarson Pools location for expert advice on pool chemicals and visit tarsonpools.com/pages/bulkchemicals.htm to browse our bulk chemical packages and other discounted items.

Pool Shopping: What Comes With This Pool Price and What Does That Mean For My Pool

tarsons-102
May is the perfect month to purchase a pool; you get to take advantage of preseason discounts, receive a better spot on the install list and your pool will be ready the first day of summer. There are a lot of questions to ask before purchasing your pool. When it comes to comparison-shopping, be sure you’re comparing apples to apples. We here at Tarson Pools are proud to offer long-lasting, well-made pools at competitive prices. Here are some questions you want to ask about “building” your pool and how it will affect the cost.

1. How will my pool be supported?
Each pool is built with structural supports to help sustain its shape and function. The more structural supports there are, the better the pool will be able to uphold against aging and wear. Some pool companies place these structural supports every 6-8 feet. We place them every 4 feet to ensure your pool lasts as long as possible.

2. How is the frame of my pool constructed?
Behind your pool’s liner is the frame of the pool. This frame determines shape and strength. Depending on the type of pool you choose, the frame may be molded as it is built. On all of the pools we build, the frame is created as one steel piece. Not only does this create a more sustainable structure, but it also makes it easier to install or replace your liner. Molded frames are difficult to cover with a liner since they are uneven. That can increase the service time on your pool and end up costing you more money.

3. Is the type of edging used on a pool important?
Notice the white edging of the pool pictured above. All the pools we install are made with an aluminum edging due to its stability and resistance to damage. Plastic edges can crack or wear with the elements, so you can save yourself future repairs by choosing the more sustainable metal option.

4. Are there differences in stairs?
Covering pool stairs with the liner saves the builder time and cuts costs. This is an unwise practice due to the constant use of the stairs. All of that up and down motion can tear your liner and lead to you having to replace it. This is especially true if your dogs like to swim in your pool. Also, on warmer days the growth of algae in your pool increases. Stairs covered with pool liners will become more slippery. This can result in someone slipping and hurting themselves. We take the time to place in a separate staircase that has a slip guard to avoid both of these problems.

5. When will the concrete go in once my pool is installed?
If you choose an inground pool, it will need to be surrounded with concrete upon completion. For the sake of time, the installer may place the concrete as they finish up the install. It is strongly recommended you wait up to two weeks before adding the concrete to allow the ground to settle. Although it requires the installer to come back after the pool is installed, we make it a priority to be certain everything is done to create the highest form of sustainability for our customers.

There are many details involved when purchasing a pool, but it’s not just about look and price. You need to know what your pool price includes and that it is built with the best materials to help you avoid unnecessary repairs. We have been installing pools for over 50 years and make it our mission to build your pool with the best materials possible so you can swim happy longer. Spring install is still going on, so check us out online at tarsonpools.com or call your neighborhood store today for more details!

What is the theme of your event? A simple backyard BBQ, an evening dinner by the pool, or a more casual family event?  Is this a fun kid friendly event or an intimate gathering of adults?

For a children friendly event be sure to provide your guests with little swimmers, towels, sunscreen and pool game options like diving sticks. Some guests will bring their own but it never hurts to have extra on hand.

For an adult theme pool party consider the ambiance of the event. Maybe something simple and airy like this would work. If the party is more of an evening affair consider floating candles or pool lights.

Now the party is planned and the guests are invited! Making sure your guests are comfortable is the next order of business. Plan that not all guests will be swimming, some may want to sit and chat. Be sure you have provided plenty of seating and space to relax near the pool for those who won’t be getting in the water.

Shade will be important as well!  An umbrella or seating in parts of your backyard that are naturally shaded will make your guests more comfortable. We offer a full line of retractable awnings, if your backyard offers no natural shade.  You don’t want sunburned guests leaving your party.

For an adult pool party consider adding in theme ideas where they make sense. Adults might not like a shark filled with fruit but maybe a signature cocktail or mocktail is more fitting. You can also add other elements that will make the day special and memorable like these napkin rings. It’s the small details that will have your guests raving!
